The Speed Awareness Course 20mph (NSAC20) is not nationally available, it is currently a pilot scheme that operates in four police authorities – Avon & Somerset, Gwent, North Wales and South Wales.
TTC is actively supporting this pilot scheme by offering the 20mph Speed Awareness Courses at 8 venues across Avon and Somerset, South Wales, North Wales and Gwent Police Authorities.
Unlike the National Speed Awareness Course, this scheme aims to create safer environments for vulnerable road users and help reduce the speed at which people drive in 20 mph areas by encouraging drivers to alter their attitudes towards excessive or inappropriate speed.
The Speed Awareness Course 20mph (NSAC20) is a classroom-based course that includes an interactive presentation and discussion in a relaxed and informal atmosphere on all aspects of driving and in particular, speed control. There is no driving involved in this course.
Following the success of the National Speed Awareness Course, the Speed Awareness Course 20mph scheme was introduced to allow the police to divert low-end speeding motorists to education as opposed to the Fixed Penalty System. Drivers who successfully complete the course after accepting an option of attending, do so as an alternative to the Fixed Penalty Scheme of a fine and penalty points endorsed on their licence.
Drivers who exceed a 20mph speed limit between 24 and 31 miles per hour and have not previously attended a course within a 3 year period will be offered a course in the area where the offence was committed or in an area where the NSAC20 pilot scheme has also been adopted.
