Frequently Asked Questions

Alcohol Diversion Scheme

The Alcohol Diversion scheme is a police-referred course currently only offered within Cumbria, and Hereford (West Mercia).  TTC supports this initiative as we are committed to working with the police to help reduce the level of alcohol fuelled crime in a bid to minimise the risk to individuals and the wider community.

Offenders who have received a Fixed Penalty ticket for one of the following offences:

  • Drunk and Disorderly (Section 91 Criminal Justice Act 1967);
  • Section 5 Public Order Act where drinking was involved (Section 5 Public Order Act 1986),

may be given the opportunity to attend and complete a two hour Alcohol Diversion scheme course.  TTC delivers Alcohol Diversion scheme courses across Cumbria at venues located in Barrow, Carlisle, Workington, Hereford and West Mercia.

The Alcohol Diversion Scheme has been put in to place to give Police the discretion to offer the public who commit selected offences the opportunity to attend a course as an alternative to potential prosecution, or the Fixed Penalty system of a fine.

If an offender opts to take an Alcohol Diversion course, the fee is £45, however, on successful completion Cumbria Police will take no further action with the £90 Penalty Notice for Disorder waived.

The course is interactive and held in a relaxed environment, where attendees gain an understanding of:

– The longer term effects of drinking;
– The potential risks to themselves and others in alcohol fuelled situations;
– Alcohol Units;
– How to identify risk situations.

The course is classroom based and takes place in one session taking around 2 hours.
