TOP FIRMS LEARN ABOUT DRIVER SAFETY IN CHARITY SEMINARS - Tuesday, February 20th, 2007
Businesses throughout Shropshire are finding out more about their legal obligation towards the safety of their employees in the workplace - while also helping the Severn Hospice.
JT Hughes in Telford hosted the first event for 30 of the county’s top firms including DENSO and Lyreco, managing to raise just over £300 for the charity.
Graham Wynn, director of driver education specialists, the TTC Group, took businesses through a host of issues surrounding alcohol, the “morning after” and over the counter medicines, as well as health and safety obligations and corporate liability.
This was followed by a seminar on responsible driving from Malcolm Jones, National Training Manager with TTC, which helps the corporate sector to Manage Occupational Road Risk.
Dealer principal Vernon Hogg said: “We trialled the idea on our staff at the end of last year and found it to be very beneficial as it taught me and my staff many things which we just weren’t aware of.
“Many employers are unaware, as I was, of their legal obligation for the safety of their drivers and staff and the fact that the workplace includes vehicles used on behalf of the employer whether owned by the employer or the employee.
“We are now offering all businesses in Shropshire the opportunity to find out the real facts about alcohol, road safety and work related motoring, helping them put themselves in the best possible position.”
Steve Newman, the Shropshire Star’s deputy Production Manager who was at the seminar, said: “The duty of care and issues of company liability were a real eye opener for businesses with fleet management issues.
“People also need to be aware that what they believe to be an innocuous drink with a friend or colleague can put you over the limit due to the size of measures being served.”
Annual figures showed that in 2005 over 3,400 people were killed and more than 44,000 were seriously injured on Britain’s roads with 30 per cent being “at work” drivers.
A second session will be held on March 14. Any firm interested in enrolling should email vernon.hogg@jthughes.co.uk or dan.bowdler@jthughes.co.uk to book a place.
All proceeds are being donated to the Severn Hospice with JT Hughes and the TTC Group both supporters of the charity.
The partnership was formed at the end of 2006 as part of JT Hughes’ commitment to the Severn Hospice and their intention to raise funds through tangible business interest.
