COLLEGE STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT DRINK, DRUGS AND DRIVING - Monday, December 18th, 2006

Telford students volunteered to attend a seminar on alcohol, drugs and driving put on by the TTC Group which is campaigning for all colleges and schools to have such quality education.
A total of 100 attended the over subscribed course run by the alcohol awareness organisation from Hadley Park, Telford, and held at Telford College of Arts & Technology as part of an “enrichment” course.
They were given important information on alcohol units, how long alcohol stays in the body and how drink is now stronger and served in much larger measures.
Trainer Ted Clewley reminded the teenage audience never to have any alcohol before driving.
“It only takes a small amount of alcohol to take you above the drink drive limit which puts lives at risk and leads to, at least, a 12 month ban.”
He warned them to beware of designer drinks which, at five per cent, are stronger than normal strength beers.
“Many people are regularly drinking well above their limit and causing irreparable damage to their health. Others are unaware that they are still over the limit the following day as the alcohol has not had enough time to get out of the system.”
The British Medical Association advise that to stay in the low risk category men should drink no more than 21 units per week and women 14 units.
“These weekly levels of alcohol should definitely not be consumed in one session,” added Mr Clewley.
College lecturer Ray Soper said the course was over subscribed as soon as it was announced.
“It is the first time we have put this course on as part of our enrichment programme. It has been an excellent exercise.”
The TTC Group is a specialist driver training organisation for the corporate world and the UKs largest provider of courses for convicted drink drivers.
