COLLEGE STUDENTS IN ALCOHOL TALK - Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

College students in South Wales learned about the dangers of drink driving at a talk given by a leading alcohol education organisation.

A total of 60 A level students at Llandovery College heard from the TTC Group about alcohol units, how long alcohol stays in the body, drink drive limits and a range of health issues.

They were shown a healthy liver and a sample of a cirrhotic liver, said TTC manager Mel Hughes, whose organisation educates thousands of convicted drink drivers in a bid to reduce drink driving.

Liver damage caused by excessive drinking is on the increase in the UK and is affecting many young people who binge drink, revealed TTC.

Students experienced how it felt to be very drunk having to walk a white line wearing special Drunkbuster goggles which split the vision and give the wearer a hazy view of the world.

“It shows them how alcohol affects the brain and the eyesight. Several students walked the line wearing the goggles,” said Mr Hughes.

The TTC Group educates 10,000 convicted drink drivers each year from across the UK, including Wales. A total of 1,086 drink drivers were referred onto the course last year by magistrates in north and Mid Wales where TTC courses are held.

They get up to a quarter off their driving ban for successfully completing the course which has been praised for reducing re-offending rates nationwide.

TTC also put on corporate training courses to educate employees about alcohol in a bid to cut the number of driving deaths and injuries and prevent them from being arrested for drink driving.
