TRANSPORT DRIVERS EDUCATION ROADSHOW
A transport “roadshow” has begun to educate thousands of the country’s professional drivers about drink driving.
The UK Traffic Commission has called in the TTC Group - the UK’s leading alcohol training organisation - to educate 4,000 LGV and Public Service Vehicle operators in a series of nationwide training sessions being held from Scotland to the Isle of Wight.
TTC, with more than 45 trainers, will deliver training to freight owners and managers of coach, bus and lorry operations at 25 UK venues.
The first was attended by 110 operators in Wakefield in May with the final session teaching operators in London in March 2007.
TTC Development Manager John Price said that the agenda covered the strength of alcohol, units of alcohol and company drug and alcohol policies with effective and interactive demonstrations. They were also made aware of the problems of prescribed medications and recreational drugs .
“Out of 110 operators in the Wakefield session only five said they had a drug and alcohol policy in place in their organisation. We have now supplied them with information on how to put that right and protect themselves for the future,” he said.
Chris Cooper, of the Vehicle Operators Service Agency (VOSA), who organised the event on behalf of the Traffic Commission, said: “It was very well received by the operators as was the TTC presentation as drink driving is seen as a very important issue by both the Traffic Commission and the operators.”
TTC Group Director Graham Wynn said they were contacted by the UK Traffic Commission to stage the 10 month training sessions.
“Educated motorists make better drivers which contributes towards our aim of reducing deaths and injuries on our roads.
“A consistent message on alcohol and especially the problems of the morning after will go out to transport professionals so that they are aware of the pitfalls and dangers caused by drinking and driving.
“Many people who attend our drink drive classes after being convicted of an offence were caught the next morning unaware that their blood alcohol level was over the limit,” said Mr Wynn, whose organisation educate thousands of drivers each year in both the corporate and public sector.
The TTC Group, of Central Park, Telford, Shropshire, run 30 per cent of the UK’s education courses for convicted drink drivers which have been acclaimed for reducing re-offending rates. They also run corporate driving and speed awareness courses.
