OBE FOR SHROPSHIRE ROAD SAFETY PIONEER
Graham Wynn, a Shropshire pioneer of drink drive education which has gained global recognition, has received the OBE from the Queen for services to road safety.
The TTC Group director, with his wife and fellow director Jenny, set up their company in 1993 to trial a new Government initiative to educate convicted drink drivers about alcohol.
In 2000, the Government gave the go ahead to expand the rehabilitation programme nationwide – with TTC (Telford Training Consultants)at the forefront of the groundbreaking training, working closely with the Department for Transport.
Over the past five years the award winning company has seen phenomenal growth with its training programme praised for reducing drink drive re-offending rates across the UK. TTC is now the largest provider of alcohol education in the UK putting on 800 courses for almost 10,000 offenders in 14 counties each year plus mid and north Wales. Around 400 attend courses each year in Shropshire run at Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Telford, Oswestry and Whitchurch.
“I’m bowled over by the award. But it is all down to our hard working team of professionals who together have helped to put the TTC Group on the map. More importantly they have successfully got over to thousands of people that we can and do have safer roads by educating people,” said Mr Wynn.
The father of three, who also has two stepsons, praised his wife Jenny for her tremendous contribution to the company.
“It is a husband and wife team. It is a great partnership in more ways than one,” said Graham, who received his OBE from the Queen at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace yesterday. (wed)
“The Queen asked me what I had done for road safety and I told her about our successful drink drive education courses and all the work we had done working with the Government and road safety organisations.”
Mr Wynn (55), a member of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, travels the country raising awareness about drink driving and road safety at seminars and conferences for businesses, road safety professionals and magistrates.
A former Telford magistrate, he said he was delighted by the award which was down to wife and co-director Jenny and a dedicated team based at their head office in Central Park, Telford, a regional office in the north-west and trainers from throughout the UK.
The TTC Group has expanded its training programme into the workforce to encourage businesses to “change attitudes” and ultimately improve road safety among the nation’s employees.
They have been commended for helping to tackle alcohol and drug excess by the nation’s workforce costing the NHS £3 billion each year with a loss of 17 million working days through absenteeism caused by drink and drugs.
Their courses educate the workforce about alcohol, drugs, prescribed and over the counter medicines, and their impact on health and driver safety. They have also pioneered the introduction of a much more “factory friendly” form of drug and alcohol testing to ensure a safer workforce and boost productivity while allowing companies to keep abreast with new health and safety legislation.
A TTC Road Safety Division has since been formed to run courses for the National Driver Improvement Scheme and to work with road safety professionals in the UK and abroad.
A former best new Shropshire business award winner, TTC is a “showcase” business for UK companies who learn about their business methods, expertise, innovative work and ability to inspire others.
Mr Wynn, who is a leading member of many national road safety organisations including Airso and Brake added: “We don’t just join these groups. We like to get actively involved.”
Chairman of the newly formed Telford Business Partnership and a shadow board member of Telford First, Mr Wynn is interested in the future development and growth of the new town. A strong supporter of the rejuvenated Telford United, he is a sponsor of its excellence centre set up to train young footballers.
A farmer’s son from Shifnal, Mr Wynn began his working career at Reginald Tildesley’s working his way up to director of the Oakley Group during a 28 year career.
