LORRY DRIVERS “STUNNED” BY DRINK DRIVE CONVICTION
Lorry drivers who only drank alcohol at weekends were “stunned” after being arrested for drink driving during the working week.
As professional drivers, the two men – stopped by police in separate incidents in Chesterfield – thought they had been behaving responsibly by only drinking from Friday night until Sunday when they didn’t drive any vehicles. They abstained during working weekdays.
They both volunteered to attend a drink drive rehabilitation course after appearing before local magistrates. After attending the education course they both realised that they had been binge drinking by consuming large amounts of strong lager at the weekend which meant that alcohol was still in their system and affecting their driving at the start of the following week.
“The unit content varies across the range of drinks and people don’t realise the increased strength of many popular drinks today,” said TTC Group director Graham Wynn, whose organisation educates more than 10,000 drink drivers each year.
TTC Group trainer Michael Sheehan, (pictured)who delivers the national rehabilitation course for drink drivers in Derbyshire, said: “They were absolutely stunned. They truly thought that they had been behaving responsibly as professional lorry drivers.
But this was not unusual behaviour with many people drinking ten pints in a session – which contains more units of alcohol than a bottle of whisky, he added.
The TTC Group are the UK’s largest provider of the drink drive rehabilitation course and they also run courses for the corporate sector and fleet managers in a bid to prevent drivers receiving a conviction and ultimately losing their jobs.
