RUGBY MAGISTRATES LEARN ABOUT DRINK DRIVE COURSE
Rugby magistrates sent themselves onto a rehabilitation course normally reserved for drink drivers who appear before them in court.
A total of 22 JPs who sit at Rugby Magistrates Court learned all about the education received by offenders arrested for driving with excess alcohol.
Tim Edwards, a magistrate for 16 years, said the seminar from course provider, the TTC Group, was “invaluable” as it taught JPs all about the course which they ask offenders to attend in order to get up to a quarter off their driving ban.
“The information we received certainly added meaning to what we say to people when they appear before us for sentence. Now we know exactly what the course entails.
“It is an absolutely brilliant course and has many benefits for drivers.”
Mel Hughes, of the driver training specialists, the TTC Group, gave an insight to magistrates into the scheme which the organisation runs across Warwickshire and many parts of the UK.
Magistrates heard how one in four drink drivers are caught in the morning unaware that they are still over the limit from the night before.
The vast majority of drink drivers who attend the course, say they wished they had the knowledge about alcohol, units, absorption rates, health and effects on driving ability before they broke the law, said Mr Hughes.
The TTC Group is the UKs largest provider of the drink drive rehabilitation course. It also provides training for the corporate sector on alcohol and drug awareness as part of a detailed education programme for fleet drivers. For more information call 0845 270 4380 or visit www.ttc-uk.com
This was the fourth course run especially for Warwickshire JPs in Rugby, Stratford and Nuneaton. The company is currently touring UK magistrates courts and by the end of this year will have given an overview of the training course to 2,500 JPs and senior court staff.
