Driver training with a difference was the order of the day at a fun Scalextric event which doubled up as a unique training day for employees at a Cheshire company.
National driver trainers TTC Automotive organised the racing car event at Sellafield Ltd’s Capenhurst Site as part of their Safety First campaign.
Staff “inundated” the computerised eight track Scalextric racing circuit to compete for the fastest lap with the winner pictured left.
During the event, TTC staff got over important road safety messages about the dangers of drink and drug driving and speed awareness.
Employees tested out special “beer goggles” which split the vision and show the wearer how difficult it is to even walk - similar to a person drinking too much alcohol.
It followed on from classroom training already given to employees due to be followed up with on road driver training.
“It was a fun way to re-inforce the road safety message. It is the first time we have done this and it went down very well,” said TTC’s Business Development officer Christine Holmes.
“They had a fantastic time and went away with some very important messages about the dangers of driving the morning after drinking alcohol the night before and to watch out for over the counter medicines which can affect your driving.”
Paul Bell, who organised the Safety First campaign, said they called in TTC Automotive to carry out driver awareness training which culminated in the fun Scalextric event.
“TTC were on site earlier in the year to do alcohol awareness and the effects of alcohol on the body for 200 employees. We like to do something a bit different and get people involved and the Scalextric event was great fun.
“People got information on alcohol throughout the event which was useful to know such as how many units of alcohol you should be drinking and how to be aware of alcohol staying in the body in case you are driving the next day."
TTC Automotive helps large and small organisations to manage business vehicles and drivers to promote safety, reduce running costs and meet legal requirements. With a national network of highly qualified trainers, it tailors Driving for Business training courses for companies and the public sector.
