DRINK DRIVE COURSE SHOCKS PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS
20 April 2010

A leading flour distributor has added a new ingredient to its driver education programme – information on alcohol and prescription drugs delivered by TTC Automotive, part of the TTC Group.

Allied Mills called in the national business driver training organisation to deliver driver training courses focussing on the effects of alcohol and over the counter medicines and drugs.

A total of 59 drivers, who deliver flour to bakeries across the UK, attended the course along with office staff as part of their Driver CPC training.

“We found that some of the drivers were unaware of the drink drive regulations and how to work out alcohol units to ensure they were not over the limit the next morning. They obviously know not to drink and drive but they did not know that just five units of alcohol will put a man over the legal limit,”said Allan Ward, Distribution Services Manager for Allied Mills.
“They also learned about how taking over the counter medicines can affect your driving. It has made us all more aware about the danger of drink and drugs.

“It was very worthwhile and we have asked TTC to come back and deliver the course to the rest of our staff who work inside the mill. Anything we can do to reduce accidents on the road is very worthwhile.”

TTC trainers Mel Hughes and Martin Bowen delivered the training session to the Allied Mills workforce, including drivers, office staff and management from Tilbury and Belfast at their Manchester depot.

“Most people who attend our courses find the information is a real eye opener. Alcohol units, absorption rates and “the morning after” syndrome are relatively unknown to them,” said Mel.

The sessions demonstrated how alcoholic drinks are now stronger than ever before and served in larger measures. Absorption rates and how long it takes alcohol to leave the body were also included as was the impact on health.

The award winning TTC Group, with its head office in Telford, Shropshire, educates hundreds of thousands of the nation’s drivers. As well as providing corporate driver education, TTC is the UK’s leading provider of alcohol awareness courses for convicted drink drivers and a leading provider of speed awareness and national driver improvement courses.
